Ellen Worrell was born Nov. 10, 1860 in Blandinville, IL., the 1st of 3 children daughter of Charles Worrell and Sarah (Harris)Worrell and died Feb. 13, 1923 in Blandinville, IL.
The Harris family line goes back to Iaac Harris who died in 1777 in Brunswick Co., VA. The surname Harris is a Welsh derivation, and means “the son of Harry”, which means “lord & master”. Reuben Harris Sr. was born 3/22/1771 in Brunswick Co., VA and married in 1790. They had 6 children and lived in Greenville Co., SC, Jackson & White Co., TN. Reuben Harris Jr. was born in 1804 in TN, and died in 1868 and buried in Liberty Cemetery, north of Blandinville, IL. He married Alice “Allie{“ Wolfe who was born in TN in 1804 and died in 1886. They had 10 children. one of these children was Sarah who married Charles Worrell.
Charles Worrell was born 2/19/1828 in Baltimore, MD and died 1/6/1898. Sarah died 8 days later & both are buried in Wesley Chapel Cemetery, NW of Blandinville, IL. Charles father’s name was also Charles who was born 1/14/1783 in MD and died 1/28/1870 in Blandinville, IL. He married Elenor (Ellen) Tipton in Zanesville, OH. Ellen was born in MD in 1786 & died 10/1/1873. Charles father was John Worrell born in MD in 3/13/1752 & died in 1786. He married Aberilla Gorsuch. Aberilla’s great grandfather was killed by Indians in 1661, he was a Quaker. Charles was only 3 years old when father died. John’s father was Henry Worrell who was born in 1725 in MD. He married Julaitha and had 4 children. Worrell was spelled several ways Werall, Wyrrall, Woorall, Wirrall, Warel, etc. There was a district in Cheshire, England, which was adjoins Lancashire on the south called “Wirrall Hundred”. The town, Worle, appeared in Domesday Book of about 1087, which King Henry William the Conqueror ordered compiled as a sort of Census of England. One of the Warels of France accompanied Wm. the conqueror to England as one of his French Knights in the Norman Conquest of 1066. Sir William de Warel was one of King Richard the Lion heart’s Knights who went with the King on the Third Crusade in 1190 to the holy land to rescue Christ’s Tomb from the Moslems or Islam. The Warels were said to have come from Arles in southern France. The one who accompanied Wm. the Conqueror to England was Sir Hubert de Warel who lost three of his sons at the Battle of Hastings on the South Coast of England in 1066, & was given the privilege of bearing “Three Lions” in his arms, the same as the Arms of the Royal Family of England. Later, in the Reign of Queen Mary Tudor, the Worrall Arms were considered too much like the Royal Family Arms, and were changed to “two lions”. There is a Worrall Hall in West Yorkshire, England.
Ellen Tipton had a relative Jonathan Tipton who live 118 years from 1639 in England and moved to VA. and died 1/21/1757 and only had 4 children. The Tipton’s go back to Sir Anthony de Tipton born in 1260. Anthony was a member of the King’s Army & a descendant of the Scottish Tiptons that had settled in & around the borough of Tipton in Shopshire, England. Fire Arms had not been invented yet so battles were fought with armor, swords, lance and charging horses. The English army entered Wales and met the Walch army at foot of Snowdon Mountain on Dec. 10, 1282. A battle was fought; the Welch army was completely annihilated, but Prince Llewellyn fled on horseback, crossing the bridge of Bulith closely pursued by Anthony Tipton. If the Prince could shake his pursuer he had a good chance of making his escape. The Prince turned into a wooded section and suddenly turned to do battle with his pursuer. Both were clad in Armour and coats of mail, and seated on a charger. There was a clash of swords and the duel was on. Finally, Anthony managed to thrust his long lance through the Armour of the Prince and the Prince fell from his horse mortally wounded. As was the custom in those days, the victor would search the body of the victim for valuables and important papers. When Anthony Tipton removed the Armour of the Prince, he was amazed to learn that he had slain the Prince of Wales, the man most wanted by King Edward I. Anthony stood guard over the body until the King was notified. He cut off his head & presented it to the King, who caused it to be crowned with ivy and placed on the Tower of London. On the next day, Dec. 11, 1282, for his bravery and valiant conduct, Anthony Tipton was knighted on the field of battle, by King Edward I, Sir Anthony de Tipton and given a Coat of Arms inscribed with the motto “Causam Decidit” or properly “Causa Decidit”, with a crest; an upright hand holding a sword, meaning “The sword in this hand caused the decision that ended the war.”
