The Gaumer / Harris Family Line
HARRIS FAMILY
The surname Harris is of Welsh derivation, and means “the son of Harry”. Harry has its origan in two sources: 1) the Anglo Saxon word “Harra”, which means “lord and master”; 2) the English attempt at pronouncing the French “Henri”. All the kings were popularly know as Harry in their own time, and the practice of styling them Henry is quite modern.
Isaac Harris died in 1777 in Brunswick Co., VA. “It was ordered that John, Wooten, Benjamin, Elizabeth and Mary Harris, orphans be bound over to the Church Warden of Meherrin Parish.” His wife’s name is not known and they had 8 children.
