GLEASON FAMILY
John Streeter Gleason was in Lewis Co., NY about 1807 as one of the original settlers. He served in the War of 1812, in NY with Captian Hart Humphrey’s company, and also with Capt. Jared Knapp. He served with his brother Joel Gleason. “Check History of Lewis Co., NY 1860 by Franklin B. Hough”. John moved from Lewis Co., NY to Ohio about 1815-1918, and then to Russell Twp. In Putnam Co., IN. in 1821 just before it was first formed. “Check p. 233 of the History of Putman Co. 1821 per Atlas of Putnam Co.” We note that the cencus of 1850 of Warren Co., IL shows the birthplace of son Joel as IN. His farm in Putnam Co. is known as the “Gleason 80.” He was buried near this site along with six unknown children.
John Nelson Gleason was born in Chautauqua Co., New York. He lived in Putman Co., IN in 1837 when the 1st child was born to John & Mahala Ward. They moved to Hancock, Co., IL in 1837-38. In Aug. 1842 they bought land in Honcock Co. from James & Elizabeth Locket: W ½ of SE ¼ of Sect. 24, Twp. 7N, Range 5W (80 acres). In 1850 lived in LaHarpe, Hancock Co., IL & in 1854 lived in McDonough Co., IL.
Mahala died May 20, 1851 of “child bed fever”, presumably the chid died too. She was buried in Wesley Chapel Cemetery & shared a stone with Nancy Gleason
He was a US Marshall in IL. Assisted in evicting the Mormons from Nauvoo, Pike Co., IL.
In 1860 cencus for Hancock Co. shows John with 2nd wife Caroline. John had 9 children.

In 1867, after son returned from Civil War, moved to Chariton, IL, and to Lucas Co., IA.
In 1870, moved to the vicinity of Munden, KS, in Rebublic Co. See the Republic Co. Atlas, p. 10 for his & John S. Gleason’s farm sites. He lived with his brother Jackson Gleason on the 1885 cencus in Fairview Twp., Rebublic Co., KS. In 1880 cencus he was living alone in Fairview.
Alexander Strahan Gleason was living in Hancock Co., IL in 1854, but appearsed in Fairview, KS in 1880 along with brother William. In 1885 was farming in Rosecreek Twp., Republic Co., KS. Lived RFD Frankford, KS in 1910 & Glen Elder, Ks. In 1912. He had bad eyes & was only boy who did not serve in Civil War.
Rhoda had bad eyes, she was blind in 1 eye. She was married at brides home in Republic Co., KS. Moved to Chariton, Iowa in 1867, then returned to Munden, KS with family in 1870. They lived in Oklahoma territory in 1900 at P.O. Okeene, OK in 1905. In 1926, the moved to Chester, OK. She married James Harvey Severn & married in Chariton, IA.
John S. Gleason was born in Hancock Co., IL in 1839 & lived there
until 1861, when he enlisted in Company D, 28th IL. Volunteer Infantry,
serving until June, 1865. He was in the Western Dept. & was in 12 battles
and many skirmishes. He was at the siege of Vicksburg and Spanish Fort.
He was mustered out at Mobile. After the army he emigrated to Iowa, locating
in Lucas Co. and was a farmer. In 1870, he moved to Republic Co., KS &
took a homestead on Section 1, Twp. 2, Range 2, and commenced to improve
the place. He was one of the early settlers & was the 1st to engage
in the stock business. He sold out in1881, when he bought the NW quarter
of Section 26, Twp. 1, Range 2. He farmed 90 acres, had 400 apple trees,
50 peach trees, and raised cattle & hogs.
John married Nancy C. Leeper of Newborn, IA in 1866 had 8 children
& a member of the Methodist Church at Munden, KS. Nancy Leeper’s father
was from IN. & mother from KT. John was 5’8 ½” tall, light complexted,
blue eyes & dark hair.
